TheNMEA0183Data InterfaceStandardwas developedbytheNational
MarineElectronicsAssociationofAmerica.Itisaninternationalstandardthat
enablesequipmentfrom many different manufacturersto be connected
together and to share information.
Theinformation is passedin “sentences”,eachofwhichhasathree-letter
sentenceidentifier.When youcheckto see ifoneitemwill“talk” toanother,
makesurethatthetwoitemsboth use the same sentenceidentifiers.For
example:VTG carriesCourseand SpeedOverGrounddata;GLL carries
latitude andlongitude;DBT carrieswaterdepth;MWV carriesrelativewind
angleand wind speeddata.
TheNMEA0183standardcarriessimilarinformationtoSeaTalk.However,it
hastheimportantdifference thatonecablewillonlycarry informationin one
direction. For thisreasonNMEA0183isgenerallyused to connectadata
receiverandatransmitter together:for example,a compasssensor
transmitting heading to a radar,or a GPS sensor (or Chartplotter)transmitting
positionandnavigation datato a radar.
NMEA Input Connection
ThetwoNMEA/Powerinput connectorsare normallyusedfor non-SeaTalk
Compass(heading)dataor GPS. Itcan alsobeusedforadditionalnavigation
data(ifnotprovidedvia SeaTalk).
Connectthe input(s)to the orangeandyellowwires (Channel1) and/or the
greenand bluewires(Channel2).Refer toPower and NMEA Input
Connectionon page 8-15for further details.
Forexample,to connect a RaymarineHeadingSensor to the NMEA
Channel 1input,connect thecablesand power supply usinga suitable
connectorblock,as shown in the diagrambelow.Ifinstalled, itmay be
convenienttoconnectthe power to theSeaTalkauxiliaryjunctionbox
describedinthefollowing section.
