GPSMap450s comes with powerful dual frequency

What is GPS?

The Global Positioning System

(GPS), is the only fully-functional satellite naviga-

tion system. More than two dozen GPS satellites

orbit the Earth, transmitting radio signals which

allow GPS receivers to determine their location,

speed and direction. Since the first experimental

satellite was launched in 1978, GPS has become

indispensable for navigation around the world.

Developed by the United States Department of

Defense, it is officially named NAVSTAR GPS

(Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging Global

Positioning System). Although the cost of main-

taining the system is approximately US$400M per

year, including the replacement of aging satellites,

GPS is free for civilian use.

In late 2005, the first in a series of next-genera-

tion GPS satellites was added to the constellation,

offering several new capabilities, including a sec-

ond civilian GPS signal called L2C for enhanced

accuracy and reliability. In the coming years, addi-

tional next-generation satellites will increase cov-

erage of L2C and add a third and fourth civilian

signal to the system.

A GPS receiver calculates its position by measur-

ing the distance between itself and three or more

GPS satellites. Measuring the time delay between

transmission and reception of the GPS radio sig-

nal gives the distance to each satellite, since the

signal travels at a known speed. The radio signal

also carries information about the satellite loca-

tion so the receiver can compute the exact posi-

tion of the satellite. After determining position and

distance of at least three satellites, the receiver

computes its location.

The GPS design calls for 24 satellites to be dis-

tributed equally among six circular orbital planes.

Orbiting at an altitude of 10,988 nautical miles,

each satellite passes over the same location on

Earth twice a day. The orbits are arranged so at

least four satellites are always within line of sight

from almost any place on Earth. As of August

2006 the GPS system has 29 active satellites.

The extra satellites improve GPS accuracy by

offering more points from which to measure.

These extra satellites also provide redundancy

should a satellite fail.
